Locomotive 14 Firebox Explosion - July 1953

..

.

Imagine my surprise, when I learned that #14 suffered a firebox explosion!  I had come across copies of the Central Railroad of New Jersey's repair forms in my research, but found nothing in them to suggest that the repair was the result of from anything catastrophic.

I received from my father, who had accumulated quite an assortment and collection of historical railroad documents over many years, specifically old "Locomotive Notes" by Roy Linscott. It was in these Locomotive Notes that it was discovered that #14 suffered the firebox explosion. That discovery in turn led to several documents making their way to this author.

After mentioning the incident on the main BEDT page, Tom Hendrickson was fortunate enough to locate a newspaper article of the firebox explosion of #14. The article is from the July 20, 1953 edition of the New York Times, and can be seen to the right.

Below you will also find numerous documents and images of related reports. Ray State, upon my contacting him and requesting his assistance; was fortunate enough to locate an Interstate Commerce Commission Report containing a photo and the findings of the ICC Investigator.

Also below, you will see the "Locomotive Notes" issue with the date of the firebox explosion, which was the piece that initiated the research into this matter. I have also scanned the documents from Central Railroad of New Jersey Shops, including a copy of a blueprint, as well as a document/blueprint from BEDT in 1958.

Note that the Specification Card is dated 1935, and entered in the State of Georgia, County of Fulton. I am concluding that in consideration of the date and location filed, these Specification Cards were created by Birmingham Rail & Loco, as they brokered the sale of number 14 to Havemeyer & Elder / Brooklyn Eastern District Terminal in 1935, and are located in the South. (Current address is in Alabama).
