Pre-September 30, 1979 as foot boards are still mounted
and FRA coupler cutbar extentions are not yet installed.
According to Joe Roborecky, that gold Dodge van was a BEDT owned vehicle
and was used to commute to and from the Navy Yard among other uses. unknown photographer authors collection

At some point in time between the image above and the image below, several
anomolies are noticed on #26:
portions of the body, (but not the entire body) have been repainted. The
red frame stripe has been removed.
The numbers 5 5 appear on the back of the cab, and by July 1981, the front
steps have been replaced completely.
While the repaint may have been part of a freshing up, it is believed this
locomotive suffered a small accident
necessatating the replacement of the front steps. |

cab.
Why this is, has not been determined to date.

What's with the unpainted front steps?!? As there are grease stains
under the engine doors, the entire loco was not repainted.
However, BEDT and 26 now appear on the cab. Joe Roborecky believes the steps
have been replaced due to damage,
i.e.: running over wheel stops which are low enough and on both rails
to take out both sides of steps.
This might also explain why this locomotive is seen without those steps when
it was surplused and stored at Fulton Terminal
after BEDT operations ceased in 1983. Since the steps were new, it was not
cost effective to scrap or sell them with
loco.
